Health insurance is required for all international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors. Health Insurance is for your own protection since the cost of health care in the U.S. is very expensive. In addition, federal regulations require all J-1 Exchange Visitors to have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements indicated below. Note: Dependents of J-1 exchange visitors must also be covered during the period of participation in the sponsors program.

Insurance Requirements are as Follows for international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors: A maximum $150 deductible (international students)

A maximum $500 deductible (J-1 Exchange Visitors)
At least $50,000 in medical benefits per accident or illness
At least $10,000 for medical evacuation
At least $7,500 for repatriation

Students are charged automatically for health insurance arranged through the University of Houston each semester during class registration.

Students who provide proof of alternate insurance each semester may receive a waiver and will not have to pay for UH health insurance. Health insurance proof must be in English and show the insured's name, dates of coverage, and the amounts of coverage indicated above. If the waiver is granted before fee payment (e.g., your tuition and fees), you will not be billed for the UH health insurance. If a waiver is granted after fee payment, you may receive a refund of the insurance fee until the deadline of the 20th class day of each semester.

Specific questions about UH health insurance will be answered at the orientation program for new international students and at individual orientation appointments for J-1 Exchange Visitors. In addition, you are welcome to call or visit the insurance representative at the UH Health Center at (713) 743-5137.
