Health insurance is required for all international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors. Health Insurance is for your own protection since the cost of health care in the U.S. is very expensive. In addition, federal regulations require all J-1 Exchange Visitors to have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements indicated below. Note: Dependents of J-1 exchange visitors must also be covered during the period of participation in the sponsors program.

Insurance Requirements are as Follows for international students and J-1 Exchange Visitors:

An annual individual deductible of no more than $500.
At least $50,000 in medical benefits per accident or illness
At least $10,000 for medical evacuation
At least $7,500 for repatriation

Students are charged automatically for health insurance arranged through the University of Houston each semester during class registration.

A waiver of the health insurance fee may be requested online with proof of alternate acceptable insurance. Waiver procedures and deadline information are available at: www.uh.edu/admin/hc and www.macori.com/uh. The Official Reporting Day (ORD) as posted on the academic calendar for EACH FALL, SPRING, AND SUMMER SEMESTER is the last day to waive insurance. No waiver will be accepted after that date.

Specific questions about UH health insurance will be answered at the orientation program for new international students and at individual orientation appointments for J-1 Exchange Visitors. In addition, you are welcome to call or visit the insurance representative at the UH Health Center at (713) 743-5137.
