International Education Week 2011                                   News

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint effort of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of their efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in United States. International Education Week (IEW) is celebrated all across United States annually during the third week of November and is an opportunity for the University of Houston to showcase international initiatives across the campus.

International Education Week Inaugural Ceremony green

Join the UH community as we officially celebrate the start of International Education Week 2011. Browse among booths highlighting UH student organizations and UH departments. This is a public event sponsored by the International Education Week Committee in collaboration with Council of Ethnic Organizations (CEO), Office of International Studies and Programs (OISP), International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSSO), and Language and Culture Center (LCC). International Marketplace green

Tired of only eating local Houstonian cuisine? Want to experience another culture without leaving campus? Come to UH’s International Marketplace, specially organized for International Education Week. Here you can meet members of the Council of Ethnic Organizations and International Student Organizations. Visit their booths and experience some of the countries and customs represented at UH. International food will be available for purchase from student organizations. This is also an opportunity for you to learn more about study abroad, non-immigrant visa regulations, and UH’s intensive English programs as representatives from OISP, ISSSO, and LCC will be on site. U.S. Passport Fair green

Are you a U.S. citizen needing passport services? Visit the United States Postal Service booth at the International Marketplace. USPS will be on site accepting passport applications and answering passport –related questions. For more information, contact Grace Semple-Paul.

Careers with the United States present unique opportunities to connect globally, interact with U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy, acquire transferrable skills, and represent America to the world. Additionally, the United States Department of State regularly ranks among the top 10 places to work in the U.S. Federal Government. Want to learn more? A representative from U.S. Department of State will be on-site to answer questions you may have and provide you with information about career opportunities for U.S. citizens in federal service. The Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta (Honor Society for International Scholars) honors J-1 Exchange Visitors, Fulbright Scholars, Reciprocal Educational Exchange Students, and Faculty who conducted study abroad programs during the past year at this invitation only reception. This invitation-only event is in honor of the dedicated individuals who provide front-ling support for international education at UH. Members of the International Student and Scholar Services Office, Language and Culture Center, Office of International Studies and Programs, Office of Admissions (International), Council of Ethnic Organizations and select administrators are invited to celebrate another year of assisting international students/scholars succeed while at UH and supporting UH students/faculty success while studying abroad. Employment Seminar for International Students, Scholars, Faculty and Staff blue

Interested in learning more about non-immigrant employment regulations? This seminar is open to all international students, scholars, faculty, and staff affiliated with University of Houston. Emphasis will be on F & J employment regulations and application processes. Designated School Officials (DSOs) and Alternate Responsible Officers (AROs) from International Student and Scholar Services will be available to answer employment-related questions. Also, a representative from University Career Services will share job search tips and techniques to assist international students transitioning to employment. A local immigration attorney will be on site to present about employment-related immigration (such as H, L, E, permanent residency) and to answer employment-related questions. This seminar is especially beneficial for non-immigrant s who plan to graduate within the next 12 months. For more information, contact Anita Gaines.

The J-1 Exchange Visitor Process blue

This special employment seminar break-out session will provide information for academic departments (UH faculty and staff) interested in sponsoring research scholars, short-term scholars, professors, or interns on the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa.
